Betula pendula (Silver Birch) - 175/250cm
Birch trees are best known for their striking ornamental bark, and are ideal for small or medium sized gardens. Birches look effective planted on their own, but are often planted in small groups in front of dark foliage, which contrasts with the bright white bark. In autumn the green leaves turn to warm yellow colours and pendant catkins are produced. Grows best in moist, fertile soil which is well drained. Betula pendula has characteristic peeling white bark, which has contasting dark markings and distinctive pendulous branches. Average height 60ft (if left un-pruned), spread 30ft. Hardy
