Betula pendula 'Tristis' is a variety with slender, pendulous branches, giving a 'weeping' outline to the tree. Birch trees are best known for their striking ornamental bark, and are ideal for small or medium sized gardens. Birches look effective planted on their own, but are often planted in small groups in front of dark foliage, which contrasts with the bark. In autumn the green leaves turn to warm yellow colours and pendant catkins are produced. Grows best in moist, fertile soil which is well drained.
