Lucy’s news from the nursery:

This week at the nursery we have been beginning to think about the seasons ahead of us. We are placing our orders for next season’s bareroot stock of roses, soft fruit & trees. You’ll notice at the top of the nursery where the fruit tree sale is that there are lots of gaps, this gives us the perfect chance to have a shuffle around, pot up existing trees into bigger pots & re-organise them into their groups, e.g. sorbus, birch, nut trees, prunus. If you are heading to the top of the nursery don’t forget to pop through the wooden gate into Old Walter’s Meadow…it is looking rather pretty swathed in white at the moment.

If you are wondering what this week’s FREEEBEE is exactly then I can tell you that it is a little rose bush (actually it looks like there are 3 bushes in one pot). The term ‘tots’ is given to a plant that is in a tiny pot that is very cute & small, usually a houseplant. You can grow this rose tot in a pot in the garden or you could split it into 3 small rose bushes. If you are looking for larger roses for your garden we have just had some lovely rose bushes in that are on special offer £9 each (5 for £40) - my favourite is a variety called Handel that has creamy white flowers edged with pink.

On Thursday we welcomed Steeple Aston Garden Club for an evening at the nursery. Our gardening club evenings start with a cup of tea, slice of cake & a talk from dad (Andrew) about how the nursery began & what is currently going on. Afterwards we walk around the nursery answering any questions the members may have or offering advice. This time we were keen to share our latest improvements with using eco-pots & tree planter bags rather than the traditional plastic pots. If you are part of a gardening club and would like to book an evening at the nursery please email me at Lucy@bunkershillgardenshop.co.uk for more information. They are normally held on Thursdays 6-8pm.

This week’s highlights…Lavender, coreopsis, euphorbias, Erigeron, roses, curcuma, plumbago, salvias & more!

Some jobs for the garden:
* Cut back any perennials that have finished flowering such as erysimum, alchemilla, nepeta to encourage fresh new grow
* For your raspberry bushes - cut out any old fruited canes
* Prune lavender flower heads off once finished flowering. Trim plants into neat bushes without cutting into old wood.

Wishing you all the best
