Lucy’s news from the nursery:
The nursery is starting to take on a late summer feel with lots of grasses & flowering plants such as echinacea, rudbeckia, verbena & sedums. These plants are really beneficial for pollinators that are still busy foraging whilst the weather is warm. You can create a prairie-style of planting by creating swathes of these plants together. The grasses will add structure to your garden throughout autumn & into winter with their dried flower heads. Another useful plant for adding interest later in the year are hydrangeas, especially the paniculata types or arborescens whose blooms dry & stay add architectural structure to a border throughout the colder months.
For those houseplant lovers amongst you, you’ll be pleased to hear that the Half Price Happy Houseplant Sale continues, with new additions in the tunnel this week. We have dracena for £10, Monstera for £7 & an unusual variety of prayer plant for just £3! ? If you have a conservatory you may want to try a plumbago, a pandorea or a citrus plant ?
This week’s DEEBEE is also a houseplant…get a Cambria orchid for just £2! This type of orchid is a hybrid that has wonderfully unusual spotted flowers in a variety of colours. They are easy to look after - keep in a draught-free room, water once a week & keep away from direct sunlight.
This week’s highlights…Echinacea, abelias, hebes, grasses, houseplants, albizia, hydrangeas, sempervivums & more!
Some jobs for the garden:
* Cut back herbs (we did the tearoom ones this week!)
* Prune laurel hedge with secateurs or loppers to encourage bushy growth
* Pre-order your spring bulbs to avoid disappointment - you can order online for collection or nationwide delivery
Wishing you all the best
