News from the nursery:
This week we had the solstice which marks summer officially starting with the longest day of the year. This year it really does feel like summer has begun, after weeks of rain we finally have a period of sunshine. The plants are enjoying the warmth with dahlias blooming, roses & philadelphus releasing their fragrance into the air, and the climbers seem to shot up overnight.
As we enter into summer, now is the last chance for bedding & veg plants. If you need some colour for your pots to jazz up your patio then pop along to the nursery to choose geraniums, petunias, cosmos & more. If you had one of our compact blackberry deebees the other month you will soon be enjoying your first harvest, as the berries are beginning to form (just need to protect them from the pesky birds).
This week we have two DEEBEES to choose from…the fishtail palm for just £9 or a fatsia spider web for just £3. The fishtail palm (Caryota mitis) is an unusual palm that is grown as a houseplant in the UK but is native to Tropical Asia. It has distinctive leaves with ragged edges and a pointed shape giving it its common name. In the wild it can grow up to 10m tall…however at home you’ll find it will grow to around 2m! The fatsia on offer is an attractive variety with green & cream lobed leaves that have the effect of webbing hence it’s name spider web. A useful plant for a sunny or shadier spot (it’s very versatile) in your garden that looks nice brightening up an area or underplanted with other shade loving plants.
This week’s highlights: Echinaceas, delphiniums, salvias, dianthus, Veronica, Mandevilla, indoor ferns, dahlias, agapanthus, gaura, achillea & more!
Some jobs for the garden:
* Harvest lettuce, radish & other salads
* Shade your greenhouse from the heat of the sun
* water your garden plants & houseplants more frequently in warmer weather
* Stake tall perennials like delphiniums
Wishing you all the best
