News from the nursery:
The month of June has flown by & it now feels like summer is here with the arrival of sunshine & the abundance of colour. Last week was Andrew & Liz’s wedding anniversary & this week was Simon & Lucy’s anniversary. They got married 3 years ago in Old Walter’s Meadow behind the nursery with a very colouful micro-wedding. You can now wander around the meadow to see how it has changed compared to previous years. This year there are more scabious, some different grasses, red clover & meadow vetchling. We will keep you posted about the heavy horse event this year as we still have to confirm logistics.
This month blue seems to be the stand out colour for flowers ?. In with the herbs there are the bright blue flowers of borage and a little bit later chicory. For blue flowering climbers you have clematis, Passion flowers & plumbagos. Then in the shady areas you can brighten them up with blue Himalayan poppies or Jacob’s ladder. For sunnier positions you could choose lavender, hardy geraniums, salvias or agapanthus.
This week’s DEEBEE is a canna lily for just £3. Add a tropical feel to your garden this summer with the addition of a canna lily that thrives in the heat of the summer. Although they are commonly called ‘lilies’ they are not related to true lilies, they are actually related to bananas & gingers ?. They have large, paddle-shaped leaves & produces flamboyant flowers in various shades of colours including yellow, orange, peach & red. Easy to grow in containers - keep them moist in the summer and move them inside a frost-free environment for the winter.
This week’s highlights: Hydrangeas, zinnia, black-eyed Susan, Jack’s beans, lavender, Geraniums now £1, Hardy ferns, gaura, salvias & more!
Some jobs for the garden:
* Trim back climbers that have gone a bit wild such as honeysuckles
* Add bamboo canes to support tall stems of plants such as echinacea
* keep an eye on watering this week, when it is windy and warm plants dry out very quickly. You can read Andrew watering guide on our website for more information.
Wishing you all the best
Andrew, Liz, Lucy & Simon
