Lucy’s news from the nursery:
The summer has flown by & we are now able to enjoy the change of seasons with the leaves starting to turn their beautiful autumn colours. If you are at the nursery this week you will see the vibrant red leaves of the Quercus rubra (red oak), the Parrotia (Ironwood) with shades ranging from orange to purple, as well as the Cercidiphyllum (Katsura) with its deliciously caramel scented golden foliage. We begin to start thinking about other autumnal treats like pumpkins & gourds which will be arriving soon to add delightful pops of orange to the nursery.
Many of you have asked about the Heavy Horse Event after the joy of watching Flynn at work in Old Walter’s Meadow last year. After some research we decided that this year we would give the meadow a rest & allow it to die down naturally. This will enable the seeds to remain on the plants for the birds to enjoy & then eventually fall onto the ground to grow next year. We also know that the meadow is teaming with nests of field voles & mice (Nimbus loves pushing his nose into the meadow in search of them!?) so it is definitely the perfect habitat for them. This year we have had the resident owl in the woods calling to its mate, as well as the sighting of three owlets in the neighbouring field, who we are sure are making the most of the plentiful food available to them in the meadow. However, we are planning a spring event with the return of Flynn to do logging demonstrations & a spring fair.
This week’s DEEBEE is the unusual plant commonly known as a Kangaroo paw plant (Anigozanthos ‘Mysterious Beauty’) for just £1. It is a striking plant native to Australia that is known to attract nectar-feeding birds. It has narrow leaves & produces velvety tubular flowers that resemble a kangaroo’s paw when they open. In the UK grow as a houseplant or conservatory plant.
This week’s highlights… Bulbs, cyclamen, Japanese anemones, onion sets, garlic bulbs, garden mums, hardy ferns, winter pansies & violas, hardy cyclamen, honeysuckles & more!
Some jobs for the garden:
* Mow your lawn & then sow lawn seed on any patches…or try mixed with clover to add nitrogen to the soil & keep it greener for longer.
* Plant prepared hyacinths so they flower in time for Christmas
* Plant onion sets & garlic bulbs
Wishing you all the best
