Common name: Comfrey
Latin name: Symphytum officinale
A clump-forming perennial with hairy leaves that produces clusters of bell-shaped, pink-purple flowers from May to June.
Usually found in the wild along rivers and damp ground.
It is a useful plant for organic gardeners as its leaves can be used for slug control, fertiliser & as a composting aid.
In herbal medicine it can be used to treat sprains, bruises and wounds, and to ease the pain of arthritis.
Average height 2-3ft.
