Malus sylvestris (Wild Crabapple)

Malus sylvestris, or wild crabapple is a native rounded tree with mid-green leaves, that also makes an excellent hedging plant. It bears pretty pink-flushed white flowers in late spring followed by greenish yellow fruits, which are delicious made into jellies. Wild crabapples are tolerant of nearly any soil (except very dry, sandy soil), and respond well to pruning by producing many new shoots, forming a thick hedge. Good planted with other native hedging plants. Prune to 5ft+ as a hedge, or will reach 20ft+ as a specimen tree.
