Quercus robur (Oak)

Common oak. The King of the Forest. Oak is a long-lived, deciduous, spreading tree with fissured grey-brown bark and distinctive dark green leaves which have 4 or 5 lobes on each side. Small strings of flowers are borne in spring, followed by acorns that develop from green to brown over a year. Oak is a particularly good tree for attracting wildlife, the acorns providing valuable food for birds and small mammals. Oak makes a good wind break or screen, and grows well on moist soil. It reaches an eventual height of 40ft+ (but can kept at a lower height with regular pruning
