Dahlia information:
Planting:
- Plant tubers approx. 10cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil about 60cm (2ft) apart (add farmyard soil improver/manure if soil is poor).
- If planting dormant tubers then plant directly into their growing space in Mid-April (they will be slightly behind ones started off in the greenhouse)
- If planting potted tubers or tubers with shoots from greenhouse then wait until the frosts have passed (around late May) before planting outside.
- Mulch once planted to keep in moisture.
- Protect from slugs & snails when new growth appears.
- In the autumn/winter dig up to store or mulch heavily.
Support: For large-flowering varieties use a single bamboo cane to tie stem to and for small-headed varieties create a support using canes & twine or add a metal plant support. Staking is not neccassary for dwarf dahlias.
Care: Water your dahlias well during hot, dry weather - give them a good soaking rather once a week rather than surface level watering of soil. Feed them with a liquid seaweed feed weekly from July-September. Deadhead regularly to encourage new blooms.
End of season care: You can either choose to leave your tubers in situ if you have mild winters & free-darining soil but you must mulch heavily. Alternatively you can cut down the stems & old foliage in November then lift the tubers making sure to shake off as much soil as possible & remove any dead/damaged tubers. Then store in crates with dry potting compost or sand just over the crowns. Store in a cool, frost-free environment with plenty of air flow like a shed or garage.
