Viburnum opulus (Guelder Rose)

Viburnum opulus is a hardy, vigorous, deciduous shrub ideal for a hedges or a woodland garden. It bears lacecap-like, white flowers in late spring, followed by bright red, fleshy fruit. The three-lobed, dark green leaves turn shades of brilliant red and orange in autumn, making a beautiful display combined with the scarlet berries.  Excellent for a mixed native hedge. Viburnum opulus will grow happily in shade, and tolerates wet soils and exposed sites. Average height 5-8ft as a hedge.

Viburnum lantana (Wayfaring Tree)

Viburnum lantana differs to viburnum opulus in it's leaves, which are heart shaped rather than lobed, as well as being deeply veined and covered in a soft downy hair. It is a larger plant than the guelder rose if left to grow unpruned, but shares it's bright attractive autumn leaf colours and berries. Viburnum lantana is suited to drier conditions than the guelder rose, and prefers a little more shelter
